Just seen it on the news... sad.

Yes, I was shocked to read this as well. Haven't told the kids yet, I'm sure they'll be shocked too. Never knew she was ill and never knew she was 63.

Sarah Jane Smith was the first assistant I remember. She was my favourite assistant too. I used to have a video of her first adventure. It was a good one with Jon Pertwee facing down a Sontaran warrior who had been transporting scientists back to Medieval times to repair his spaceship. In addition he was supplying the local warlord with firearms. That story also had the Brigidier, who died recently too. Sarah Jane Smith started off as one of those feisty feminists, but soon fell in line. I much preferred her to Leela, the two Romanas and all Peter Davison's assistants. Peri was pretty hot though.

I was sad to hear this morning that she'd died...

She was my favorite assistant, and I'll always associate her with happy memories of watching Dr. Who in the 1970's.

Shame... comments on beeb suggest she was a lovely woman in real life too

RIP, she had been a fixture in my TV at various points over the years.

I have no idea how I am going to break the news to my daughter who loves the Sarah Jane Adventures.
I had thought it strange that there hadn't been any new episodes for a while.

Here for rides.
RIP to a 70's and 00's icon. Shame she didn't act in more stuff.

Married for 40+ years too, will be tough on her husband.

Very sad. A nice lady, who was perhaps more talented than was generally acknowledged for many years whilst quite a few people from that era got the accolades (Letts, Pertwee and particularly Tom Baker). Despite that and doing various audio stuff was able to land cameos in the new series and her own spin-off series which I think delighted quite a few people (whatever they thought of the series).

I did think the BBC pieces have been a bit toned down or focussing on more recent things. From the classic series undoubtedly the most popular assistant and I don't think there's any harm in saying that, it's not exactly going to annoy anyone.
