There's just been a piece on the local news about regional accents, and they got people from Hull (Kingston Upon actually) to say Dry White Wine, and it sounded like draah waaht waahn, I say it like this: dr-eye w-eye-t w-eye-n, how do you say it? :rain:

The thing that irkes me is when people excuse bad grammar for regional accents. :wahhey:

It is (when I was last at school, any road) 'I was, we were' and not 'I were, we was'. ;)

Harumph :rain:

They're all 'oop themselves' in 'ulll - right mikee? Love you

Me: Dri w-hite wyne. (Chardonnay, Lindemans as I enunciate ;) (2008) )

I think we should value local accents. They give a real sense of identity and it would be a poorer world if we all sounded the same.

I don't even have a problem with 'we was', in the right context. In many regions it isn't bad grammar i.e ignorance, it's a dialect usage going back nearly a thousand years. Communication is all about using the right language for the right occasion and tbh it cheers me up to hear people using local idiom and dialect when they are talking informally. We've been saying 'thee' round here (and 'yo' in the Black Country, where I grew up) for a couple of centuries longer than we have been saying 'you'.

IMO it's very rude to correct people's spelling on forums, CP, but if you're going to go harumphing about grammar I'm afraid you do invite us to point out that the word is 'irks', not 'irkes'.

I like to hear regional accents too, its a shame many of them are dyeing out due to people using the queens English more.
