I don't know how drop bars for gravel bikes and the like compare with road bike bars (I suspect they're wider and shallower)

As a rule they generally come wider as standard, however, I've replaced my standard 460mm wide bars with 500 wide bars, measured at the hoods.

They are also flared much more than normal gravel bars, so 24 degrees of flare on mine, meaning on the drops they are wider again.

I'm just a slim built, average height bloke, but I find these wider bars super comfortable, especially when off road touring. They also give me great control at low speeds off-road.

Another cycling old wives tale.
What ever is comfortable works for me

Well yes, and that clearly differs from person to person for anatomical and possibly other reasons such as injury.
Not sure what thus is an old wives tale? And given we're talking cycling, any perceived BS is far more likely to have come from an old bloke
