Are you doing the "bucket of water and a patch" style fix, or just bunging in a new tube?

Use tyre levers to get one side of the tyre off. Start away from the valve so you don't damage it with the levers. Don't take both sides of the tyre off.

Then take the wheel off the bike.

Pull the inner tube out carefully, starting from the side of the wheel opposite to the valve. Carefully pop the valve out.

Inflate the inner tube a bit and carefully rotate it in your fingers until you find where the puncture is. Alternatively, use a bucket of water. If the puncture is bigger than a pinhole, you'll be better off slinging the old tube and fitting a new one.

Let all the air out of the tube.

Make sure the bit where the puncture is is very clean and dry. Make the repair.

Run your fingers round the inside of the tyre to make sure that there are no sharp objects pointing through. Also check the rim tape to make sure it's not damaged.

Push the valve back through the hole in the rim. Work the tube back into the tyre.

Inflate the inner tube slightly to make sure it doesn't twist inside the tyre.

Start with the bit of the tyre bead that is by the valve - push the valve up slightly and get the bead in underneath it.

Carefully pop the bead back in all the way round, as far as you can with your fingers. Make sure you haven't pinched any of the inner tube between the tyre and the rim.

Push two tyre levers in between the rim and the bead of the tyre on each side of the bit of bead that still needs to go back in and carefully but firmly draw the levers together, thereby popping the tyre fully back onto the rim. Again, make sure you don't pinch the tube between the tyre and the rim.

Put the wheel back on the bike.

Inflate the tyre.

Job's a good'un!

You forgot the talc.... the whole job will be much easier if you douse the tyre bead with talc, which makes rubber slippery.

Well I thought I had one. But apparently not. I'd hit a hole hidden in the grass, one hell of a smack. Felt like it was deflating. So when I get the kit out to patch it, it hasn't deflated at all. O.o

Here's a small tip for the next time you think you have a puncture - if the tyre has air in it and there's no air coming out of it then it hasn't got a puncture - that's what tyres are supposed to do ...

(I'll get me coat).

How do the new (to me) patches work? I remember in the old days it was a plain rubber square you just applied the glue and held the patch in place, job done.
I had to fix one the other day with something that looks a bit like a corn plaster, it has an orange circle on it. I followed the little diagram but it would not stick for love or money! I even tried peeling it apart in case there was a backing strip on it I could not see.
OK you can stop RALYAO now.

Thanks for any help.

I can never get them to work either. but I do like the spongey self adhesive ones though!
