My O/H and daughter have shown a bit of interest in cycling.

Come the spring, I'd like to try and sort out a bike they can both use (initially)

A Dutch type bike is high on the list. Any suggestions for a non BSO one, and any advice on the sizing would be welcome

Will that dictate hub gears and chaincase ?

I'm looking to keep the expense down so they can dip a toe and see how they get on. My O/H used to ride when the kids were small, but probably not riden for about 15 years now.

Hub gears or derallieur. the latter gives more choices for gradients.

Needs to be fairly easy to ride...don't want them put off by the weight of some of these bikes.

I'm the proud new owner of a Dawes Mohave. I'd been wanting a sit up and beg with a low step through frame but felt that most of these style bikes didn't have an adequate range of gears to deal with the big hills I navigate in Sheffield. I've found the Mojave manages the hills every bit as well as my Specialized Myka that I was using previously.

Halfords Pendleton look ok. Don't forget the 10% off if a British cycling member
