Dutch speed limits on cycle paths

Are young kids riding them? Seems dangerous!

You can't know the age of anybody (I don't have kids) but to me some looked maybe 10 years old. You get some small fat bikes for younger kids.

I believe the Dutch Government are considering requiring riders of fat-bikes under a specific age to year helmets!

(What Dutch call "fat bikes" I'd call electric motorbikes with token/redundant pedals).

Leaving aside the facts that there could be no evidence based justification, and no one would ever enforce it ... would 12mph be fair?

Well, if course, it depends. Some of the time, yes. The cycle path through my local park is often busy and I doubt I go over 10mph when riding it. So for paths well used by pedestrians - maybe. But for cycle paths beside main roads where peds are few and far between, no it wouldn't. So you'd need differently classified cycle paths with speed limit signs.

It's a stupid idea.

Imo, the Dutch Government should rather increase the minimum age for riding such a "bike"!

I agree (and based on my experience cycling around them). But dutch people I talked to about it said dutch Government looking to add restrictions but on the table currently just helmedt below a hiven age. Maybe more later.

As noted above, "fat bikes" in Holland are basically motorbikes with pedals. They are ridden at ridiculously high speeds by young kids with no thought for anyone else. They are a source of accidents Several towns, including the one I live in, have banned them. To no avail. The govt. Is considering national speed limits, insurance and age limits. Probably to no avail.

The danger is that they might enforce it if they don't like the look of you. Like if you don't pass as white enough, for example. Police selectively enforcing unreasonably low speed limits for motorists (like 15mph on an open straight rural hightway) has been a plot point in a few films over the years. Let's hope they don't make it a reality for cycling.

Which reminds me: the Cambridgeshire Busway Path has now sprouted a load of 15mph motorist speed limit (number in red circle) signs. I feared that they were planning to let drivers onto it, possibly peak direction only as it's not wide enough for two-way motoring, but no, when I checked, it seems Cambridgeshire County Council still believe the limitations in law don't apply to them and they can make motoring speed limits apply to cycling. 🙄 We discussed the wordy version of the sign previously in https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/thats-a-lot-to-read.305566/ but it seems like nobody was obeying the sign, so they thought more signs were needed!?!?

I do have a niggling worry that we cyclists are going to find ourselves on the receiving end of all sorts of restrictions and regulations for 'our safety' .
