I am informed that, courtesy of a Dublin-born grandfather, I could claim Irish citizenship.

My dad's family were Dubliners... my grandparents lived just a few streets away from the GPO in 1916. Although it was 1926, my dad was born and lived round the corner.

The chosen date for the uprising was to coincide with the latter. It is therefore totally appropriate to celebrate at Easter

The great success was the inclusion of everyone who lost their lives in this rising, and a clear differentiation between the Easter rebels and the present paramilitaries

The Rising itself wasn't the success, the reaction to it was a greater one.

Remains the only uprising cancelled by an advert in a national newspaper though. As Brendan O'Carroll pointed out.
