Easy to fit yourself though ! Not got anything in the van currently. Had two cheaper ones £70 and they were OK in other cars

I guess it depends on the car. For our Ford Ka+ 2016 (that's a 5 door!) just finding a suitable fuse point is a challenge - the 'owner's manual' shows which fuses control which circuits, however very few seem to be what it states! Putting the power lead direct into the 12v socket is easy. of course, but if it's hard-wired there is the hassle of moving the trim and routing the wires via the a - pillar

After my wife had a head-on collision (not her fault) we have put a dashcam in all three cars. Two are Nextbase 322GW and I recently added a Nextbase Piqo 2K to the little runabout/learner car. The Piqo is a neat and cost effective little camera - no frills but it does the primary job of recording what’s happening.

Many’s the person (me included) who has fitted a dashcam after an incident.

Same here. About ten years back I had a collision with another car on a narrow country lane, His fault entirely as I had pulled over and come to a stop but he tried to come by way too quickly, skidded on a pile of horse crap and glance off my front wing. I had about a hundred quids worth of damage but he ended up in a ditch and wrecked his steering. Luckily enough he put his hands up, admitted it was down to him and coughed up for his own repairs. It wasn't worth me sodding about with a claim so I swallowed my own loss.

However, had he disputed liability it would almost certainly gone down as 50/50 with the insurers and my no claims and excess would have gone for a burton, so after that I got a dashcam, in case of a repeat. And if I was at fault and my own camera proved it? It would make no difference, I would not try and blame an innocent party for my mistakes whether it was provable or not.

Our local parts place had some £10 dashcams last year. I fitted to Wife's car, my car and Daughter's car. Make escapes me - 1080 def, came with a micro SD card that would probably cost £5. I agree it may not be as good definition as some, but if it records a collision it may well mean the difference between 50/50 or no liability. Was a fiddle to wire in (piggy-back fuse holder etc) but good for the price. RRP was £70 and there were no instructions and the website was dead! That was possibly why they were cheap, but not too difficult to work the way through the menus.

I looked today when I wheeled the bike past my car - Brand is 'Proofcam'. A quick search has them for £20 on Ebay. From my experience, at that price I'd suggest it's still a good buy. I have no connection to the seller.

Read a lot about these as I didn't think would ever need one, but how bad drivers are around where I live made me decide to get a fairly cheap one. I wouldn't go really cheap and didn't want a Nextbase as I read that they're not all the they're cracked up to be. Like many well known brands these days your paying a bit for a name and a lesser specced device. Sure they are fine though.

In the end I settled on a GKU off Amazon, sold by Bird Fish. Its 4k front 1080p rear, its small easy to install the image quality is really good as is the phone app. The customer service is second to none. I wrote a luke warm review as the fag lighter power cable was too short for the slightly longer route I made in the car. This was to avoid un-sightly wires and have it in the cubby hole under the central armrest. Don't think its designed for this anyway. But I got a message off the seller whom had read the review offering to help in any way, they even offered to give me the cam for nothing. I said this wasn't required as its a great product and I was just moody as I'd taken bits out of the car. So instead they gave me a free hardwire kit. In a world of mostly terrible customer service it was really surprising. Aside from all that its a very good dash cam for reasonable money. You can pay slightly more for one with a higher resolution rear cam. I find both offer very good quality, the front is very, very good. Read the reviews, its a good product. Worth paying twice as much as an Ebay one just IMVHO. I'm guessing a 4k Nextbase would be north of £200, not sure though. I changed my review to 5 stars as its a very good product and good service. Just buy a hard wire kit if you plan on a really long power cable run, it will look better also.

If you buy a dash cam with 4k resolution. Ensure it can record at 60 frames per second not the lower specs of 30 fps.

If you have a fast moving incident the slow frame rate might not capture the detail enough for registration plate identification
