The useless management of Ebay has failed to tell us that they were severely hacked some time ago and we should all reset our passwords. Oh, thanks for letting us know. I've done mine but there isn't even anything on the Ebay website about this... learned of it through the press:
http://www.theguardian.com/technolo...es-users-to-reset-passwords-after-cyberattack
Journalists have very very occasionally been known to half-understand something technical and then multiply it by a hundred to generate their weekly thousand words. As the article itself admits, Ebay confirms that there had been “no evidence of the compromise resulting in unauthorised activity for eBay users, and no evidence of any unauthorised access to financial or credit card information” and PayPal confirmed that it had not been affected at all.

Change your password to "mypassword1". I use this for all my online accounts and none of them have ever been hacked.
Seems quite a palaver typing that lot in. I use "password" for all my passwords including online banking and never been in a spot of bother.

Ebay confirms that there had been “no evidence of the compromise resulting in unauthorised activity for eBay users, and no evidence of any unauthorised access to financial or credit card information” and PayPal confirmed that it had not been affected at all.

And you believe that? For the sake of a small password change, I'd rather be safe than sorry

Very important: it's very likely they will try to decrypt those passwords. So if you use the same username-or-email/password on other sites, make sure you change them too.

Especially paypal. A colleague had her paypal hacked, and I believe it was because she always used the same email/password and someone found one of them, and tried the combination on paypal and it worked. Aside: paypal noticed, contacted her and refunded all the fraudulent transactions!

If you are using the same username/password on multiple sites, please seriously consider something like https://lastpass.com/
