Surely this 'festival' is nothing more than pretentious claptrap with a few 'top acts' thrown in for good measure?

Oh, I dunno. It's business. Local pubs, hotels, cafes, restaurants, etc etc make a few quid. There's a buzz to it. The acts are variable and that's to be expected. Different strokes for different folks etc.

We are talking the fringe festival aren't we? Not the festival itself? They are 2 two different things and the fringe isn't what I'd call "high brow".... unless it's changed!

Like everything some of it is OK, some rubbish. Personally I tend to go to the free Fringe events, put what you want in the bucket at the end

I think you are confusing the different festivals, there is the Edinburgh International Festival which is a bunch of 'top acts' who have been invited, and then there is the Fringe where anyone can turn up and a lot of massive egos do. So it is actually a small amount pretentious claptrap which have been invited, with a huge amount of utter claptrap which turned up uninvited.

I'm voting with yello here - it is a bit of fun, does local trade no harm, and blimey, it's Summer! Time for fun and adventure! Also, there are plenty of professionals there, plying their trade - and boy! do the Scotsch need some fun... (I last went in 1987 - has it changed much? )

I think it is a great advert for Scotland. It's loads of fun, attracts loads of tourists and there is something to suit every taste and pocket at both the festival and the fringe. What's not to like?
