When? Because if it's this month everywhere will be rammed and pricey due to the festival.

Air BnB is your friend for price and diversity.

Stockbridge and Leith in particular are within easy walking/cycling distance of the city centre.

Might be a nice hotel, but the Royal Mile is a clusterf*ck of twee tourist nonsense.

Best avoided unless you're after some overpriced tartan, shortbread or whisky.

Here for rides.
The Apex's in the Grassmarket and Haymarket were clean bright safe and slightly soulless in a corporate chain kind of way, but offered stunning weekend vfm last time I stayed there.

The Double tree Hilton is nice and was cheap at weekends Hotel Du Vin very nice but expensive at weekends.

We stayed at Ibis styles last month. Nice, reasonable, good breakfast, excellent but quiet location (very close to the tram stop from the airport)

There's a lot to like about both cities, but I think Edinburgh edges it for me. I've always thought the reputation it has is unjustified, and usually formed by folk who haven't made the effort to look beyond the tourist gubbins.

I've stayed in the Waterloo and The Balmoral on Princes St, both actually OK and also The G&V up off The Royal Mile, nice hotel. All of them had decent beer at the bar which is of course the main thing.
