Currently doing the 4 mile each way from home to work each day.
takes about 25 min's and i don't really push it much.
I'm not in a hurry and i cycle to get somewhere not to break any records.

Im not really fast either, esp on the fixie.

being asked to look at a new job which would require a round trip from SW16 to Gatwick and back on a daily basis.

Would probably be too much for me.

its a nice Job and ive come to like not having to get on trians with the dirty unwashed.

Oi,they pay my wages.;)

i was going to ask what to do.
but its clear to me that a new bike would be in order.

set off very early on day one and get stuck in, as long as the pedals keep going round you'll get there

It's a big step up, milewise. You sound pretty fit though. Try it for a couple of days and see how you go. The fall-back is bike/train. If that doesn't work, take the train and cycle just at the weekends. As others have said, you just have to try it.
I hope it works on the bike, BTW.

I have the mental battle between loving cycling and it taking me to somewhere I don't want to go .

I can understand that.
Though it's more then made up for it home commuting time.
A cycle commute is great for clearing the head after a stressful day at work.

I started commuting from Redhill/Merstham into the city a few months ago (so about 20 miles each way). I'm in the office 4 days a week & use one of the other days to take the train & switch dirty/clean clothing at work - so cycle 3 days a week. I must admit, it's been easier to get used to than I expected (and I'm pushing 40..) - I could increase it to more than 3 days, but (1) I don't need to and (2) it means I can still get a few hours of cycling in on a Sunday (but heading south towards the coast, rather into the urban jungle!!).

The A23 is definitely do-able - as Ian says, it's "pretty flat", but can become a bit dull/busy at times.

+1 yea a23 is doable you get used to the nutters around and other than being a tad boring its a fine commute
I'd struggle to do 20 miles each way everyday as a commute unless I really enjoyed work. Doable though.
the "work" thing yo meanton is just a break betwen rides for me (22miles each way like michealO)

when younger I use to ride from Tottenham to Morden and back every day, that was 30 odd miles round and on a cheap MTB in jeans and a T shirt and I loved it most days, right through London and out the other side

factor in a decent bike and clothing and it's perfectly doable, and it'll do your physique wonders, I lost the best part of 2 stone back then
