elevator doors... not as safe as you think.

after showing me this tonight, my brother then told me about an incident at his work where a girl put her hand out to stop the doors closing, and they didn't stop. A passing paramedic saw what was happening and had to prise the door open before the lift moved. Girls hand was a bit mangled but thankfully still intact. Seems the fail safe doors that are on these things aren't so fail safe.

watch out for leads, belts, handbag straps, clothing, and kids!! Bad enough if its your dog! (shocking but outcome is thankfully ok so don't be afraid to watch).

That's bad, but at least the dog seemed to be reasonably ok.

if that was me I'd be seriously upset. Good job its a big strong dog and not a little yorkie or something. Prob good thing she was only going one floor by the looks of it. I always thought lift doors were supposed to detect if something was stuck. Clearly if this happened at my brothers work as well its not a unknown problem.
my advice.. Take the stairs!!

Theres a lift at a shopping centre near me that has a notice warning parents to exercize caution near the lifts if there child is wearing baby reigns. Just that one lift, which makes me think there's been an "incident" there.

Failsafes are not infallible. To be fair to the lift manufacturer the door sensors can not be expected to detect dog leashes. They are designed to detect limbs. Equally they are not designed to be used as emergency stop buttons, that's what emergency stop buttons are provided for.

I have always had a major mistrust for elevator doors and also escalator stairs. Never liked then .This proves why.

I've always had a mistrust of flying. Flight MH370 proves why.

that's exactly what my mum said last night... "OMG imagine if that was a child's reigns"

true.. But surely they should detect a hand. a lot of people do that, see someone running for the lift and put their hand out. They should make the "open door" button more obvious. they always put it next to the "close door" button with those crap symbols that take a few seconds to work out which one is which. when you're in a panic, it may as well be in brail!!

The thing is, they shouldn't be putting their hand out to stop the lift. The detectors are there to detect limbs, bodies and large obstructions.

The emergency buttons have braille instructions in the more modern lifts. The blind seem to cope perfectly with lifts.

It's impossible to factor in all risks and foolish behaviour when designing safety enhancing devices. Someone will always manage to circumvent them wittingly or unwittingly.

even so, its obviously a real danger so perhaps its time for a rethink on the sensors. If it doesn't stop with an adults hand exerting pressure , it wouldn't stop if a two year old got his arm stuck. it would be seriously hurt or worse. I don't like over the top HSE stuff but i think this is one area that be looked at.

If I was the two year old with my arm stuck in a lift door, I'd sue my parent for negligence and not the lift manufacturer for damages.

bcoz toddlers are so well behaved and never run away or put their hands where they shouldn't be before you have chance to catch them. I'm not even a mother but even i can see that happening to the best of parents, when their loaded down with buggies, shopping and possibly more than one child.
