I got pulled by the plod on the way home. I was coming down St Martins Lane and, at the junction with Chandos Place, I turned right (Londoners will probably know the junction - it's right next to the Chandos pub). A police van that was coming along the road towards the junction beeped at me and the copper driver wound down his window. The conversation was as follows.

Plod: "Don't you have to obey the law like everyone else?"

Me: "Sorry?"

Plod (pointing to sign): "That sign says 'No Right Turn'"

Me: "Actually, that sign says 'No Entry'. The sign on the other side of the pole says 'No Right Turn'... but the rectangular sign below it says 'Except Cycles'"

Plod: "Oh..." (starting to turn red as his colleague starts to giggle, as do bystanders and the cabbie next to me).

Me (pointing to traffic island I had just crossed): "Another clue might be the clearly marked cycle lane across the traffic island".

Plod: "Sorry..." (winds window up and drives off).

I was tempted to point out that he'd parked his van on the zig-zag lines of a crossing, but I thought that might be too mean. ;)

Used to be quite common misconception in town up here and why I'm not overly keen on them. You'd get abuse shouted at you from time to time. Funnily enough many of them were one way streets and cars were less than amused if you pointed that out to the many flouters. It is funny, sorry if I'm spoiling that.

Cyclechat should have a hall of fame! This should be the first inductee, absolutely brilliant I almost choked laughing.

Well I hope he is as zealous with the taxi drivers who I see turning right at that junction almost every time I pass.

Actually they often do a stupid little manoeuvre that involves pretending to begin a left turn then immediately swinging round to the right as if they are doing a U-turn instead of a right turn.

Beautiful!

We have a 'no right turn' with 'except cycles' here in York but I've only ever been challenged over it by a little old lady who affected not to hear my explanation (which was shouted as I rode off, I have to admit, I couldn't be bothered to stop and tell her properly...)
