Endemondo or Mapmyride?

Hi Folks, My cycle computer has died in the torrential rain (I think its the sensor) and as its only an Aldi special, I've bought a waterproof handlebar mount for my Blackberry and intend to use this instead, my commute is less than an hour so should be okay for battery power. I dont want to go down the garmin route yet as I'm putting every spare £ in my new bike fund.

My question is has anybody got a preference on endemondo or mapmyride or is there something better for Blackberry on app world that I've missed. I want to send the information to log in page to see progress etc.

I would prefer it if the app was free not because I'm tight its just that everytime I've paid for an app on appworld my bank have stopped my card and make me ring them to confirm identity (honestly everytime!) not a bad thing just annoying when its for a few £'s

If any one could advise on which they prefer (most accurate best information etc)

Thanks

The only thing I know about Blackberrys is they are delicious in a pie with some ice cream :mrpig:

I've got loads of mappings apps on my phone though, but I tend to mainly use MapMyRide, followed by the likes of Cyclemeter, Strava, Endomondo from time to time.

I guess it's just that I've used MMR more than any other so I'm more familar with it, and I'd guess that's the main reason anyone uses one over the other as IME the free versions of any of them all do pretty much the same.

Not much help there but that's my tuppence worth anyway.

Just bought a road bike, so a total newbie on the subject but I do have some current experience which might be of help.

I have used MapMyRide on my Blackberry for a while, logging MTB runs over the summer / autumn, this was just for a bit of fun; I mentioned logging my road rides on this to a friend, who pointed me at Strava just a few days ago, suggesting I give it a go as well (he's put 2000K on there since the spring).

I'm due a phone upgrade soon, so didn't want to buy an app' at this time, consequently I opted to load GPSpeedOMeter from Blackberry App World. It has a simple interface, is easy to get going with and I logged my first ride two days ago; I did this after registering on-line with Strava and then registering the phone within the app', once this was done it uploaded the data onto Strava with no problems (after requesting it to do so within the app' - there is a Pro version which costs but will do it automatically).

Won't be going back to MapMyRide as it looks like Strava is where it's at - the only problem now is I have a niggling competitive urge bubbling away and am drawn to go back over the run and improve my rankings on one of the 'Segments' as apparently a few hundred people have logged better times on the back roads near my home (I'm not sure if it is a problem or not actually, might be a good thing).

and therein lies the problem with Strava IMO.

Every rides becomes a TT as you beast yourself trying to improve your timings.

OK if you enjoy that sort of thing, but not my cup of tea TBH

THIS long running thread paints a picture of what Strava can do for you, or too you depending how you look at it.

Thanks for the info guys Ive downloaded gps speedometer (free version) and will try and link this to Strada as suggested by Radchenister, I've just got to be patient now and wait for the blackberry mount to arrive. Once again thanks for the prompt replies  (it always amazes me how quick people are to offer help and advice the forum)

Be interested to hear if phone mounts are considered a good idea or not?

I don't think I'll be going that far, I'm not convinced phones are all that prone to vibration and damp air; I have a computer on bars (another new toy to play with) and that'll be that; I might have a blast at the odd nice open countryside 'segment' every now and then but after reading the antics of some of the obsessive Stravistas on the other thread, it looks to me that Strava racing is best treated carefully; appears it's a bit like Absinthe, highly toxic, potentially addictive and most likely damaging to health if partaken of excessively (as pointed out by smokeysmoo).

I have both Strava and endomondo on my Galaxy Ace but use Endomondo all the time. it tells me all i want to know and show me where I have been too. I have only used strava 3 times and the trouble with it is that you are always competing against yourself or others and I don't want to do that but just enjoy my rides. Endomondo is great for that. By the way, don't worry about your battery too much, mine will last 3 hours at least.

I've considered them in the past, but I just can't bring myself to put £££££££'s worth of mobile phone on my bars.

I have a Garmin as well, but this obviously has a custom designed factory mount, and as such I don't worry about that.

So my phone goes in my pocket, and despite the Garmin I still often start a mapping app as well, and just review it when I get home.

Plus, I listen to music when I ride as well,:ninja:So I don't want earphone cables trailing over to the bars either.

I've looked at various gizmos, as it's part of the fun but limited myself to using a phone app' in pocket. My reasoning is that it's there for call outs, so it might as well do a job and help with post ride data logging; I can't see myself getting too lost in the locality, or wanting to race a ghost of myself from previous rides etc.

Got one of these as a basic tool for monitoring simple stuff, as the price was almost throw away http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-Bc160...SFP6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356724343&sr=8-1 .

I am genuinely interested in how simon the viking 's experiment pans out with the phone carrying / protecting jobby, as it might influence my new phone choice when it's time to change it, although I'd want full directional SatNav mapping and all bells and whistles from any cycling app' if sticking a phone out front.

However, it's all a bit cart before horse at present though for me, I've probably got more important things to worry about, like just getting out there enough to prove some longevity and justify my recent purchases; hopefully I'll get fit enough to travel further afield. Once outside of my local area, it's then perhaps the right time to look at the options re' navigation and more detailed logging?

In the interest of declaring biasses, I will confess to a mirky past as a kit junky but I've been around enough now to realise that none of these trinkets will ride the bike for me and it all looks a bit different when the novelty wears off.

Oh ... that listening to music stuff ... isn't that another of those tar yourself issues, won't you have someone claiming you were at fault when they've just splatted you with their tonne of 4WD dodgem car?

I'm intrigued into how it will pan out as well. If it feels unsafe I Will put the tenner down to experience and forget the idea and possibly get a better bike computer. as to app I Will see which one works best for my needs thanks for everyone's input and I will post on this thread what I think to the mount as it seems to suit loads of phones

A final note on this holder seems firm enough happy to risk my phone in it, it's bit high off the handlebars though, I have moved it a couple of times to get best position and think I've got it right now. using the paid version of gpspeedometer (managed to buy an app at last without freezing my bank card) and linked it to Strava.... totally addicted and loving it my commute has become a series of time trials trying to scalp the person above me (Gavroche and Radchenister you did warn me!)
