The only thing I can comment on is the size question. The budget and design is up to you.
Does your 'intended' know what you're planning?
If so, ~Sizing chart~ might be useful. If not, a proper jeweller will help you judge the size needed, and alter the ring afterwards if it doesn't fit properly.

if she wears costume jewelry rings try and pinch one to get a size idea  other than that, it depends on what her "style " is. Is she a fashionable type? Would she prefer brand new or Antique? or would she think "as long as he bought it with love i don't mind what it looks like"

Here for rides.
At least 1 carat.

to be fair I was broke when tlh and I got engaged. Not big and quite yellow.

The engagement ring has since been significantly upgraded. And joined by an eternity ring.

It is just as lovely to choose a ring together as it is to surprise her .

How much to spend, what should it look like, how do I know what size? In need of any advice.

So pretty much like buying a bike, get one you like the look of within your budget (not one made up by Hollywood and the jewellery industry).

For size I reckoned my little finger was about her third, and was right - but I have small hands. You can have it resized and you will probably have to at some point any way as life's changes come about.

I'm a traditional romantic like my wife, I bought it, asked her to marry me with the ring, then asked her father for permission.

Each to their own.

They don't look like this, but this is what they are:

do her in now. 25 years you will be free . and have spent less !

nah , seriously. if she needs lots spent on it she aint the right one.

i wanted to spend a fortune ( 25% of salary) on a ring and she chose a £99 ring from H Samuel.

or just dont get married and enjoy life and spend money on what you want ( bikes/Motorbikes/Hobby) instead of on things like curtains !

20 odd quid, and that was 25 years ago. Wedding ring cost less. It's about how hard you work at your relationship.

Remember, 'a months salary....' was coined by De beers who are diamond miners.

Just buy a tandem, stuff the ring!
