It appears England is in for a really tough Test series which isn't a bad thing after a, frankly, poor Sri Lankan side.
Suspect England need to skittle Pakistan out for not much more than 200 to be able to chase in the 4th innings. Particularly as England appear to be like a rabbit in headlights when faced with another "mystery" spinner
Well done Pakistan - England were well beaten by a better team - Pakistan won with a day to spare aided by some not very good batting by England - 2 10fers in the match - Woakes and the one that mattered Yasir Shah - not a mystery spinner but very good - It was a good illustration of how far off the pace England are with good spin bowling - both the bowlers - in Moen and Ali - and the batsmen - The upper order when faced with the challenge of something new - not that new actually as some of them had faced Yasir in UAE - resorted to extravagant shots when they found themselves tied down - "application" is a old school expression in the context of the new era of "expression" but it should be something that the England top order could do to mutter every now and then when at the crease.
On the plus side Woakes, Broad and Ball bowled pretty well at times only Misbah and Shafiq making scores over 50 - Finn bowled better in the second inning but I suspect he will be playing county cricket for the rest of the summer if Anderson returns - Moen as always looks vulnerable when bowling to good batsmen - the vulnerability is probably his chief asset - no clear candidate to replace him as the "spinner" - not done too much with the bat in recent times.
The stand out England player for me was Woakes - in his previous incarnations I never rated him - too lightweight, no zip to his bowling - he has worked hard to improve since then and this year has looked the real deal - his batting in the lower order is a bonus.
Anyway game on - Pakistan 1-0 up - Old Trafford this Friday
^ I make you right, but it was an under strength England team, missing a game-changing all rounder and its best bowler. On the other hand, Old Trafford often suits spinners, so I could see Yasir running riot.
And I'm very glad to be wrong about Woakes - the question is who do we drop instead?
2nd Test - Old Trafford - England won the toss and are batting - Finn out as predicted - Ball out and Anderson and Stokes in as expected - personally I would have put Rashid in instead of Moen - not drop him per se but replace - Moen is not giving them any control - Rashid would give them another look - Hales gone for 10 as I type - it was coming - he was a walking wicket for the 20 balls he faced.
Pakistan having a 'West Indies day' today. From what I gather (cricinfo) England outplayed Pakistan in every department, but having a brilliant Joe Root and a very in form and combative Woakes, are two very handy aces indeed.
Pakistan will struggle to avoid the follow-on, but must then bat long and deep and keep the score ticking along, as there are still three days of this Test left.
Yup - Root was Root at his best - Anderson and Broad didn't bowl that well early on - not making the batsmen play - but Woakes is showing he has the potential to a top all rounder - since last season and his previous incarnations for England he has worked on his game - both batting and bowling and has shown that he is not short of smarts - unlike a few others in the team - England regardless of the fact there is three days left have got to keep the pressure on.
Lunch on day three. Pakistan are 119/8 and trail by a massive 470 runs.
Woakes continues to perform with the ball and has four wickets to his name (another Michelle up for grabs?) and Root, incredibly, has four catches, all taken at 2nd slip.
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the Indian 'keeper, Saha, claimed 6 victims in the West Indies' 1st innings.
Pakistan all out for 198, 391 runs behind on the 1st innings.
BUT, despite this big lead, Cook has not enforced the follow-on and will bat. That suggests to me that Cook doesn't think England will bowl out Pakistan for less tha 391, and that they are very wary of Yasir Shah on a turning wicket in the 4th innings.
