I have a PRS300, and I love it. For carrying multiple books its the business.

However, someone really needs to take a hard look at the figures, even at the "big" players such as Waterstones and WH Smiths or they're going to get themselves priced out of the market by Amazon for the second time.

Take Lee Child's 61 Hours for example. Paperback? £5.99 to you good sir.

eBook? Ooooh. Sucks air between teeth. That's gonna cost you. New technology y'see, additional overheads what with the newness and the new stuff and all. That'll be £13.58. And I'm saving you £5.82. Cutting my own throat, squire!

I have a Kindle 2, and highly recommend it. Format isn't an issue at all, Calibre (donation-ware) will convert anything to anything. I have a load of books in PDF format which I batch-converted to Mobi and read on my Kindle.

Conversion isn't always the problem..... increasingly it is the DRM handling. It is possible to convert the file, but have access restricted by the latter.

I won't buy DRM'd books or music on principle: I want the freedom to access the content I've paid for on the device of my choosing.

Thankfully sanity appears to be prevailing in the ebook market, so there's no problem buying books without DRM.

Where are you getting your books from? Most places I look do seem to sell DRM free books but charge a whopping premium for the newer titles. WH Smiths being my favourite example, where its 3 x the price for the eBook than it is the paperback equivalent.

I contacted WH Smith about this (because I'm sad like that) and got a reply...

Dear Kaipaith

Thank you for your email.

To clarify, we negotiate different levels of discounts with different suppliers – at the moment due to volumes purchased we are able to secure better discounts on hardbacks and paperbacks. I can certainly appreciate your frustration and can assure you that your comments have been passed on to the relevant department who will certainly take your feedback into consideration during our next range review.

If I can be of any further help to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards
