I'm using a Logitech G500 mouse, but I also use one of those mousemats with the gel wrist support. I get carpal tunnel a bit, but its mostly fixed by having your chair/desk etc at the right heights so that you can use the mouse and keyboard with a relatively straight wrist. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Wave...BB7Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1360534576&sr=8-2 Doesn't look very cool and might not be any use to you, but surprisingly really helps, especially when I used to play a lot of PC games with excessive clicking :rolleyes:

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Use your "wrong" hand for a while. Swap over the buttons* and it's surprisingly easy to pick up. For a mind-bending workout swap over the direction but not the buttons.

And get used to keyboard shortcuts instead of mouse-clicking.


*I assume you use Windows and not Mac...

Thanks peeps. I'll look into your suggestions. I already switched to my "wrong" hand years ago, and now that's getting bad too. I use shortcut keys a fair bit, but I still need the mouse for some things. I haven't any more hands to try. The gel wrist pads almost seem to make it worse - I'm after a totally different-shaped mouse. Might try the one Ffoeg suggests as it seems to be a median nerve thang...

I'd have thought the "wrong hand" would be just delaying the inevitable and spreading the problem

Ffoeg's mouse looks worth a try - especially if you are having trouble with the median - other options here

Mac OS X (and all Apple computers and their input devices) has full multi-button (or multi-touch) support, always has.

Lots of good ideas here. Touch pad (eg Apple Magic Trackpad) would be my choice.

What about using a graphics tablet for an out-of-the-box solution? I use a 12"x9" one as my main form of input into my Mac G5 (used to use it with a PC before I converted), and unless I'm doing CAD work where a scroll mouse is useful, I use it for everything. One of the handy features is that you can set it to absolute positioning, so you can navigate across the screen a lot easier once you learn approximately where things on the screen relate to the tablet (a must for my three-screen wide setup!)
 
I switched to a trackball at work when I started to have problems, but several work-folk were prescribed devices such as Ffoeg suggests to alleviate their symptoms.
Although I do still use a mouse at home, my symptoms have all but disappeared since switching to an alternative at work in the last two years. I admit that a trackball was very hard to get used to initially, but it was well worth the bother.

When I used a mouse (now use the laptop track pad) I used to use a track ball but have it on my thigh. My hand was then at a much more natural position and not levering on the edge of the desk. Sometimes it would be on the side of my thigh resting on the edge of the chair seat.
I also used a graphics tablet and would type with the 'pen' in my hand so I didn't have to put it down.

I much preferred my Psion 5 with the stylus and touch screen. I wrote a lot of housing management reports with that, back in the day!
