Ethanol, also called alcohol.

Would this be banned if only just discovered?

I think it would be banned, but as with many things in the past it would quite possibly be promoted for health benefits.

If it appeared today it would be a psychoactive substance, so would automatically be banned unless the politicos modify the legislation to make an exception (such as the current exception that exists).

I can't remember all the details, who discovered alcohol.

I seem to rember from dim and distant passed schooldays that alcohol when first discovered it was called the elixer
The of life.Neat alcohol would definitely be banned in this health and safety age.

Yeah I think you're right. Though if new today it would be difficult to see it differently to other psychoactive substances. Alcohol was useful in the past for purifying drinks at a time when fresh, clean drinking water wasn't freely available. Hence the exception. We don't use it like that today, do we?

Er... i don't think ethanol necessarily purifies drinks. There are some bacteria that can live with a certain level of ethanol. Beer was drunk because the water was boiled in the brewing process, which killed the bacteria and other stuff.

Don't go buying Ethanol and try cutting it into drinks, it's de-natured with 5% methanol so you'd be blind and dead in no time..
