My sister gave me a copy of The Hour by Michael Hutchinson - an account of his preparation for an attempt on the hour record ('One man. One bike. One hour.') Rather to my surprise, it's hilarious. Here he is, eg, on his natural ease with the whole analytical nature of the preparation process:
"There has always been a certain lack of carefree verve in my make-up. My parents possibly still have the school report that says, 'I've come across clever eight-year-olds, naughty ones, but never really until now a boring one." It was at about that age that I kept toy cars in different drawers according to their scale, and only played with them in matching sets. A year later I was put in charge of the class library (about thirty books) and agonised for so long about whether to use the Dewey Decimal or Lib of Congress indices that the job was taken away from me and given to someone else. I was too boring to be a librarian."
If anyone wants to know what to get you for Christmas for under a tenner...
