Exercise

I was locking the bike up outside Aldi this morning (nipped in to see if there was any cycling stuff left and came out with garden shears). Two very heavy men were getting themselves a trolley, the conversation went along the lines of 'yeah, this gets you out of the house. Get some shopping and some exercise at the same time'.
Is that it now? A walk from the car and pushing the trolley around the supermarket is regarded as exercise?

This probably will end up getting attached to a certain P&L thread  - but you'd be surprised what counts as 'exercise' - particularly for those not used to it! I definitely remember hearing some advice - in a radio programme some years ago - aimed at the completely sedentary fifty-plus couch potatoes of this world. It said, start by remaining seated, wiggle your toes and bend/unbend your fingers; then go on to simple arm-lifting. What it emphasised is, don't go straight out and play a game of squash! You need to start small. Otherwise, likely as not, your next 'exercise' will be being wheeled into A&E with a sheet over your head...

It always amazes me just how unfit some people are. Years back, my niece and her boyfriend came to stay with me. We walked to the shops in Hebden Bridge from my house, a distance of about 350 yards. We bought the shopping and were heading back when we got to the town square, a total distance covered of about 400 yards. I was carrying half the shopping, the b/f the other half. We were chatting as we walked and then noticed that someone was missing... We turned round and saw my niece sitting on a bench and gasping for breath. She said that we were walking too quickly for her and she couldn't keep up. What shocked me was that she was only about 25 years old at the time - even at my fattest and laziest, I never got that bad!

Since then, she has lost weight and started going to the gym regularly. Now, she is a bundle of energy, never stops charging about. It's all go, go, go!

Not sure if anyone else saw it, but there was a program on the telly last night where they took 4 unfit 18+ kids to a retirement community in Florida where all the retirees are fit. There was one 100+ lady who had a daily workout at the gym.

It made quite an impact on the junk food eating youngsters.

Bliss for me is a Duvet Day too, but everyday life keeps me reasonably fit. Cycle to work, walk to the shops, etc., you don't even notice it.
