It surprises me that they are fairly evenly spread as I understood docklands and the East End were particularly badly hit. However, as the East End was densely packed housing no doubt the casualty rate per bomb was highest.

WRt specific targets, I doubt if a bomb aimer could ever accurately target a building or small area even with a plane load.

I am also surprised that Biggin Hill airport got off very lightly. I would have though the Luftwaffe would have tried to raze the place to the ground.

Airfields would perhaps be well defended? Not much use sending attacking aircraft up if there's nowhere for them to return.

Just digging out "The Most Dangerous Enemy" by Stephen Bungay.
39 people died in a raid at Biggin Hill on 30'th August, the worst single unlucky incident. WAAF officers were crucial in getting the operations room going again in hours. It was the only one that ever went down. Only a direct hit would have destroyed the operations room and then... the Luftwaffe were unlikely to have the intelligence that the back up room was Spice & Wallis Quality Family Butchers in Caterham.

It appears the planes were very well protected in blast pens, distributed around the airfields rather than lined up, like Poland, France and later Russia. There was amazing organisation and planning that the Luftwaffe had never encountered - they did raid but there were a good few phantom airfields to mislead them too.

The German tactics during the battle of Britain was to try and destroy the RAF on the ground, various miss-calculations on squadron numbers and strength were made on both sides based on assumptions that each force had a similar number of pilots and aircraft as the other side. (iirc we had fewer squadrons but more aircraft and pilots per squadron making for more than the Germans thought but that's for another discussion)

as a result of these early attacks we switched to spreading aircraft out and explosive 'dumps' being well away from anything else in concrete bunkers.

The Germans decided that invading Britain wasn't going to happen in the near future (wanting air supremacy so that their troop ships can cross without risk of air attack) and so set about trying to disrupt UK industry by hitting the factories directly or disrupting the ability for people to get to work or move raw materials around. As we know, this was done by area bombing.
Due to factories often being nestled in amongst housing this had the result of houses being hit.

Not too sure (and not going to speculate) on if hitting workers houses was a byproduct of area bombing or deliberate, it is however known that the German high command believed it was only a short matter of time before the British people fled their towns and cities and rioted against the government.

Where i live used to be a Royal Ordinance factory, in fact it was a filling factory so they made the explosives filled the shells and added the detonators.
the ONLY bomb to be dropped here (from a plane) was a small 50-100lb bomb that they assume had hung up after bombing liverpool/manchester and the plane finally managed to get it to release, it landed and detonated in the peat moss 200 yards from one of the main bomb stores.
the reason they built the factory here was because most nights of the year mist forms here and you can't see what's on the ground.
imagine if that bomb had hit tho, what a bang, medals all round for the crew to boot ;)
