my LBS said that the merida is a better spec than the boardman and said boardman is just a halfords bike with just boardman written on it. That's not true is it?

The Boardman is a Boardman bike with Boardman written on it. Your LBS is either bullsh1tting you, or they are stupid. Either way, it might be wise to find another shop.

I'd look at the Specialized Sirrus and Giant Rapids for a fast flat bar road bike

Merida crossbikes are pretty heavy...compared to a fast hybrid like a Sirrus or a £550 roadbike...

The Giant and Sirrus are very vice bikes but I think £1000 is a bit much to spend.. I'm looking at £500

The Sirrus range starts at around £350, the Giant Rapid 4 is around £420.

Of the ones you selected, the Merida bikes have front suspension so start off on the back foot as a fast road bike.

Best thing is to find a friendly LBS and test ride a few options...unfortunately, although Boardman bikes are meant to be very good vfm, no on road test rides are possible

Are you using C2W and beholden to specific shops, or free choice of shops and indeed, the Interweb?
