just back from a night out at the dog track restaurant...had a great time betting on each an every flea ridden, downtrodden, mangey useless excuse for a dog in each race....took ahile to understand the betting options....which in essence boiled down to ...you lose, then you lose again...but dog 5 in race 8 was last until the final stretch then hit warp drive and won...got me back ahead....came out £20 down on the night, which was what I went in to 'play with' .

Anyone ever won big on the mutt races?

The dog track restaurant sounds like it could have an interesting menu. Also sounds like dog 5 in race 8 could have been from Lance's Livestrong stable ;).

Been once to Walthemstow a few years ago a very good night out .

I've only had one winner on the track and that was in 1969 when Highland Wedding won the Grand National and my grand father put my pocket money on it. My only other track based betting was at Ripon Races five years ago and I found the whole experience to be an expensive sideshow to incinerating your money. I didn't share the excitement of my regular race going friends and the saving grace was a jazz quartet playing quality music in a small bandstand.

I did however 'invest' in a colleague's betting system which yielded 16% per annum compound interest. It wasn't without its moments - at one stage it looked like the money had gone AWOL but the eventual payout assisted considerably with my purchase of my Woodrup Chimera.

Many moons ago now as bored and broke country teenagers in the city we came out of our digs one evening and became aware of unusual traffic levels all heading one way, there were people on foot, in buses, in taxis and cars.. We followed the flow for quite some distance and eventually paid our way into the Powderhall Stadium which none of us had ever heard of. It wasn't long before we realised it was a dog racing venue but I doubt we would have known where to start with the betting even if we had had spare cash. It all seemed a bit dull so we soon left and put the whole thing down to experience.

I'll try it one day, the thing is I don't gamble, so that kind of takes away most of the reason for doing it.

I love dog racing. The dogs are a joy to behold, the owners are, well, individual, and the trackside bookies are on fire with their arithmetic and their hand signals.

I was pretty horrified by some of the stories that oldfatfool tells about the dog racing business so I would steer well clear of it. For example injured racings dogs having their ears hacked off to remove their owners' id tattoos so they can be dumped or killed - link.

I used to love the dogs. A mate of mine had a strategy, pick a trap number in race 1. Bet £1. If it doesnt come in bet £2 in race 2 on the same trap. Keep the same trap if it doesn't come in and double up each time. You have to have big nuts as you near the final few races if you haven't had a winner all night.........

I would like to have a go at a wee punt. The trouble is i dont understand the odds etc etc.I have a mate that would bet on the colour of the next car to come round the corner. He just looks at me like i thick when i say i cant grasp it. The last time i had a bet was in the early 90's the year the grand national was declared void after all the horses took part in an en mass false start and everyone got their money back. For a long time i blamed myself for that as i thought i'd jinxed it. I haven't put a bet on since. Good luck if your off for a flutter just dont let on you know me. It'll be fine. All the best Mike.

I have an ex racing greyhound. Never been to the races though. Never will either, there are a tad too many deaths of dogs on the track for my liking. Each to their own though.

Oldfatfool is quite right about what happens to these gorgeous gentle dogs. Our chap has scars from cigarette burns on his back, burning them teaches them to run fast as soon as that trap door opens.

I have never been to a dog race track. When I was maybe 8 years old I talked my parents into taking me to one while we were on vacation in Florida. I was all amped up about it, got there and they would not let me in. NO KIDS, even with parents. Talk about a let down.

I have never been to a horse race on a flat track either. My state is not very liberal on the gambling scene. I have been to a steeplechase horse races, there was a lot of betting going on but nothing I would call organized legal betting.
