First commute of the year for me -almost all the snow and ice has gone, and it reached the heady warmth of 12'C today.
Before I set off, I reminded myself of the fact it was my first commute, and no matter what car drivers do to me, I should just shake it off with a toothy smile and continue on my merry way (this thought came about incidentally when, on the first commute of last year, I had a car pull up beside me and the driver berate and swear at me for.... well I guess just being on that straight wide suburban road and daring to cycle. Without a proper cycle commuting filter established between brain and mouth that early in the commuting season, I (sadly) shot back at him to "Fudge off, you fudging farce hole")
Anyway, aside from all the huffing and puffing going on with me -and my rear end not quite yet well acquainted with my saddle -I was rather shocked on the way home when I saw a car creeping up to me from behind.... oh no, not again!
And the car was... a new model silver BMW. It's fair to say my buttocks were fairly clenched, and with a growing apprehension, I waited to see what the driver wanted......"hey" he said, "that rear light is great, it's the best I've seen -you're really noticeable!". FWIW, I have a Cygolite 2W USB chargeable rear light -it's a great light. I did thank him profusely, and he drove off. Nice to have a positive interaction!
