Was cycling down cornets end lane in the west midlands, past the quarries, and whack! Front wheel washes out and I land on my knee. Sure enough the quarries have dragged enough mud and fines onto the road so that it is like black ice ;).
I managed to total my 3/4 and tights and have a severe case of road rash on my right knee. On the plus side my new winter clothing came through mail order on the same day
Going to see what I can get from Solihull council as I really do want two sets of tights / shorts to keep them rotating through the week.....

Good to hear that you're OK Mark.

Remember to take photos of any damage to you, your bike and your clothing.

Also take some of the offending piece of ground.

Do quarries not have a statutory duty to keep roads clear of mud and other crap ? The council should be enforcing that.

Sorry to hear that Mark. All the best with the Knee.

In answer to the above...I dont think its statutory, but i did hear an article on the radio about some town or other having to import coal (from europe or someplace) even tho there was a coal quarry within its boundaries...because the local quarry did not have consent to transport by road...thus reaching the local town.

so maybe its a planning thing

Just read that back and it sounds very confusing, hope it makes sense (can't be bothered to re-type..sorry)

The quarries sweep the roads around here in the Mendips and they all have vehicle washers that they must drive through.

The biggest problem is the farmers dragging mud and crap onto the lanes. The mud gets compressed and is like glass next time it rains.

I know the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site in Edgbaston are doing more building work and noticed Metchley Park Road was covered in Mud and V Slipppy Monday. that was in the dry.

I know the new Hospital had Road sweepers but this new building work is lacking any sweepers.

Same for me. I was sure this was going to be the cause before I opened this thread.

December is my 'off' month. I come off at least once every December and it's been the same for years. I rarely if ever fall off any other time. Luckily nothing too serious so far but with three weeks or so to go I'm starting to get nervous already ! B)

Glad you are ok apart from the knee and best wishes for a quick recovery. I haven't been down cornets end lane for ages, can we still go straight on at the first bend after crossing the Berkswell road, and follow the track to the dual carriageway?
