Hi all,

I am essentilly new to road riding, have done a bit when necassary, but I would like to start riding to and from work and think a cheaper road bike would do me better than 'converting' my MTB.

So the question is what bike do i choose? I don't want to spend lots, infact the bear minimum really (part of this is financially driven!), and I am happy to buy second-hand.

If anyone has any thoughts I would be interested to hea.

Thanks

Dan

I'm sure I won't be the only person to suggest the universally loved Triban 3 http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-3-id_8167038.html

you can get a really nice bike from decathlon called a triban 3 for 300 pounds. there are also a few bikes in halfords around the price but the triban is the best.

Many started off on an 80's steel bike - pretty cheap to buy but if parts are worn then you end up shelling out quite a bit for parts (and presumably Labour).

So I'd go for a cheap lightly used steel or the Triban type bike.

How far is the ride to and from work? A second set of wheels with thinner, less knobbly tyres may be cheaper than buying a road bike. In winter you can then switch the wheels back to the normal MTB tyres to keep going all year round.

As others have said; the Triban 3

But - it depends on how far the commute is. If it's a couple of miles then the MTB is fine with tyres such as Schwalbe LandCruiser.

I use a road bike since it's 10+ miles each way, although the MTB with knobblies/LandCruiser's is used in bad weather.

the-stig my advice is same as i always give when i hear or read this question try a decent 2nd hand machine first and then once convinced either way , either go new route or a better 2nd hand machine always does it for me .

where are you based as i always have a spare bike or two you could try if you wanted to .
