For a long time now I have longed after a Bob Jackson frame, and I Know this is an open ended question but...... If the frame is around £500 can I make it a decent bike for around £1000 or should I just forget about it. I cycle about 150 miles a week at between 15 to 25 mph average don't want anything flash, just dependable and versatile. I did a theoretical build on Condors website and got fairly close on price but need a few ideas.

You could always buy the frame then hang it on the wall and add bits as you can afford them. If you've got the £1000 now you could get a very nice pair of wheels tyres and maybe the finishing kit, then add a groupset once you've saved a bit.

£500 for a BJ frame sounds a bit strong.

£1,000 for a decent bike? I should hope so, but you don't say what you intend to build it up with: a contemporary groupset or something period correct and what that period is.

If you "don't want anything flash, just dependable and versatile" then £500 in total would be plenty, especially if you are buying second hand: you'll get more for you money buying a complete bike, than building it yourself.

Spending £1,000 on a custom build sounds at odds with your desire for a run-of-the-mill workhorse.

I just took to the frame and was looking for some one to justify it for me, but what you say makes sense. I will get a complete bike for about five to six hundred and use the left over to sandblast and respray my two vintage frames. Thanks.
