On my present commute I have to do a ferry crossing on a river which is about 1Km wide at this point. This morning there was a heavy fog and so we had to wait for it to ease off a little but finally we made a move with a very full ferry. As we moved out into the river the fog got thicker and the skipper of the ferry was totally disorientated, so much so that after about 5 minutes we had done a full circle and were heading back to the shore line we had just left. This is Vietnam and so the ferry had no radar or compass. We then moored up again and after another 45 minutes made another attempt to cross and after much pointing and shouting from the other passengers plus some more pointing and waving from some moored fishing boats we finally arrived at the other shore and found our way down to the landing stage. I arrived a the office two and a half hours after leaving home, not bad for a 25KM journey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I included that 1KM in my cyclogs distance my average speed would be about 10KPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like when we went to Ha Long Bay.

All the holiday brochures show it on glorious sunny days, happy tourists swimming amongs the limestone islets.

The day we went it was thick with fog in the morning and we could just see gloomy shapes in the mist.
It cleared in the afternoon but the water was fffffreezing !

I wouldn't expect it to have a radar but no compass????????????????????
Surely they could pick one up for a couple of quid (or vietnamese equivelent) in the local pound+ store.

Perhaps a early christmas gift to the captain is in order Keith
