You can certainly get bespoke bikes for less than that, although typically if you're going all the way and having a bicycle made to measure you'll get very nice components as well. Even so, £3500 will buy you a very, very fine bike. I would hardly call that figure a starting point.

Indeed. I have a lovely bespoke tourer built for me by Mark Reilly at Enigma. Silver brazed and polished stainless lugs, the lot. And I really pushed the boat out as far as nice components - Phil Wood hubs and BB, Gilles Berthoud rack and stainless mudguards, etc etc. It is a lovely machine - and the all-up cost was considerably less that £3500
