Freewheel measurement please...

Could somebody please tell me the distance in mms from the mounting face of a standard screw-on freewheel to the cog?

To the centre of the cog? Eighth pitch or 'teenths? Do you want it in mms or gefeltefish?

Hi 3narf am not 100% sure what you meant by mounting plate, but below might help you figure out what you want:

1) For all standard 5 to 9 speed freewheels/cassettes in their corresponding hubs the outside of the rightmost sprockets are between 4mm to 6mm inside the outside of the right lock nut.
2) The widths of standard freewheel/cassette, outside to outside, for 5/6/7/8/9 speeds are 25mm/31mm/32mm/35.4mm/36.5mm respectively.

If the above aren't adequate for what you need please ask again.

If you are talking about a 5 speed 120mm hub, the inside of the 5 speed block to the outside of the right lock nut is around 29mm, and a 5 speed block, which is 25mm wide, would deliver a 43mm chainline (for the middle cog). Spacer width required (which I am now guessing is what you are ultimately after) could then be deduced from the width of your single sprocket and the actual chainline you want.

Perhaps I should be clearer.

It's a standard screw-on freewheel, currently a 6-speed but I'm replacing it with a single-speed freewheel.

By mounting face I mean the inboard (ie l/h) face of the freewheel.

The dimension I'm after is from that l/h face to the actual centreline of the teeth. That way, I can hopefully work out what BB length I need for my proposed new chainset, which apparently gives me a 44mm chainline with a 110.5mm BB.

It's no biggie; I could simply obtain a new freewheel (I'll need one eventually, anyway) and measure it.

Depending on the make/model the distance between the l/h face to the actual centre line of a single speed freewheel is around 8.2mm +/- 0.5mm.

I think you will have to redish the 6 speed wheel and/or line the threaded hub with requisite bb/track spacers. Shorter bb spindle won't do it (alone).

You might already have a spare or two somewhere - British thread bb lockring has the same thread so will work. If you don't have any, spacers are widely available, this place has nice pics.
