Just out of curiosity, which new freewheel and chain did you buy ?

Not new - second hand, sees seasonal use, Clark’s 5-7 speed chain.

I’d agree. But the old chain did not work when I swapped the freewheel, so tried a new chain. Replacing the old chain with the other changes in place is worth a thought, though. Thanks.

Tried the old chain with changes in place, still no-go. Swapping to a 14-32 freewheel.

It doesn't look particularly worn.
Give it a good clean up with a solvent, and a wire brush. There are traces of old muck on the cogs.
