It was a very bad line; which I guess was why she said "Lizen vary carefooly" before she was cut off ....
did she ring back and say it again??

I had one from Rome yesterday ^_^
I went through a period of getting them from Italy for a while - or at least a fifth columnist embedded here.
Always started off for some reason by asking what I thought of Italian food.
Tended to tell her that I thought it pretty good but that Italians could be damn anal about food and should just chill a bit.

In some French-speaking regions the early public telephones had an end-of-call payment system where this recorded message was repeated at the end of a call until coins were put into the slot up to the amount shown on a mechanical counter. What faith in public honesty! No guessing why that system was withdrawn — the last time I saw such a phone was 1977. Come to think of it, that must be about the time Boris Johnson first went to Brussels…
