Anyone know which part of Japan Mrs FM is from? He was talking on another thread only yesterday about how much people in Japan fear natural disasters.

Among many islands, Hawaii is expecting a wave to hit in three hours or so - the power of nature is, like the event, overwhelming. Every second counts...
I thought of FM and family when I saw the original report, and I hope everything is ok with them, in Japan, too.

Sky link.

+1, an 8.9 richter earthquake is bloody big, and despite many buildings in Japan being made to withstand 'quakes the tidal wave is something else. All we can do is watch and wait to see how the landmasses nearby fare when the wave reaches them

The news pictures are just unbelievable and the sheer scale of the situation is scary. I don't know what nuclear facilities they have, but hopefully, they won't be so badly damaged that another disaster follows.

I feel very sorry for those affected; how will they get back to something approaching normality ?

It must be very difficult to just to 'think straight' in such circumstances; sobering stuff.

I think Mrs FM and clan hail from Toyko but I'm not quite sure of the details. The FMs certainly lived in Tokyo for a bit so they'll no doubt know people who are affected.

Our Tokyo office was affected by the tremors, but all personnel are reported safe at the moment.

As others have said I hope FM's famly are safe but what a masssive disaster this is and now the extended damage that most likely will happen as a result of the Tsunami!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Horrific. Just been watching the TV news. Earthquakes - well the Japanese are as good as anyone in the world in coping with that - but Tsunamis? I don't think there's any defence against a tsunami...

I was thinking I was having a bad day, but this sort of news really puts it all into perspective.

Looking at some of the pics on the BBC website, if you are in a substantial building and can get above the first couple of storeys, you are probably OK against the tsunami. As someone said above, it is people on some of the small pacific islands that may be in great danger.

Hi everyone, and thanks for the best wishes.

My wife has only just got up (it's morning here in Canada) and we haven't heard much from anyone yet. Tokyo and Chiba, where most of my wife's family are from, seem to have got through things pretty well, but we have friends and colleagues in Sendai, which was badly hit by both the quake and the tsunami. So we hope they are okay, but there are estimates of hundreds dead in that area now.

Japan is pretty well-prepared for this kind of thing; I worry much more about the smaller pacific nations that don't have the resources.

It's difficult to hear from people because all the phone networks are down (along with transport - a lot of people are stuck on trains etc.). I've had a few messages on Facebook from people checking in to say that they are okay.
