When my wife and I moved to Puglia, Italy in 2006 we were embraced by our elderly neighbours in every sense. Thanks to their generous spirits we ended up closer to them than our biological families. It was like waking up one day to discover you have a dozen grandparents.

A few died in the 12 years we lived there. Four have died this week, likely from coronavirus, although tests aren't available for us to know conclusively.

This is the tarantella, a traditional folk dance that we saw at every festa or party. It's a tragedy about a girl being bitten (pizzicato) by a spider and dying. The tune normally makes me remember happy, warm evenings and smile but tonight I'm crushed. No opportunity to go to the funerals tomorrow. No opportunity to say arrivederla. No opportunity to express my gratitude.

That is very sad and puts a face to what was only a statistic in the paper. I do feel for you being away from people you love.
