They really were tripping (or, more accurately, flying) when this was happening; a gig in Sweden in late 1965.

I say "they"; Townshend, Entwistle and Moon were, Daltrey wasn't. This is why the playing is all over the place. Note the way Daltrey changes key, correctly, and the rest don't, forcing him to change back down.
Also notice toward the end, as the uncut string at the head of Townshend's guitar nearly has Daltrey's eye out, which p1sses off the already exasperated singer to the point that he throws the mike away and walks off. Only to come back on and pretend to dance.
Post-gig, Mr.Daltrey was so riled that he tipped a large box of Mr. Moon's amphetamines down the bog backstage (harsh, as Moon was the best of a bad bunch that evening). Mr. Moon remonstrated, only to be knocked spark out by a Daltrey uppercut. This act saw Mr. Daltrey dismissed from the band for some weeks.
The whole tableau is rendered even more bizarre by Mr. J. Tarbuck acting as MC.
