Front derailleur issue

I have adjusted the front derailleur after fitting a new cable and it works fine when moving up through small to middle to big.
However when clicking down from the big ring, it jumps straight down to the small, despite my best tweaking efforts.
Any ideas?

My first check would be that the cable isn't too slack, because it's only the cable and the shifter mechanism that determines where the derailleur comes to rest when moving to the middle ring.

Would that make it jump from big to small?

Yes. Correct cable length is crucial for holding the chain on the middle ring. The travel limit screws mostly dictate its position on the big ring (cable fully tight) and the small ring (cable fully slack).
