Front Lights

When driving and observing other cyclists, I reckon a flashing front light is much better seen than a fixed which, as is being discussed up thread, can easily get lost amongst the DRLs/general light 'noise' (if light can have noise but I hope you'll get what I mean ! ), so I always use a flashing front - and rear come to that, for the same reason.

With an (admittedly dimmer ) fixed light .. just to keep legal .

Mounting a rear flasher high up - say on a backpack/helmet - is also much easier seen when in a car too , probably because it 'stands out in the crowd'.

If that's the only reason, it's not been needed since 2005 (but never 'made it legal' before then, as flashing lights were simply not allowed, although I was rarely pulled for it).

If you ride on the drops you'll need one on the bike too; and "just to keep legal" (there are min. & max. mounting heights for bike lights).

Article published today on the BBC news site says that "...on 7 February 2011, the Commission made it compulsory for all new cars to be equipped with daytime running lights that switch on automatically when the engine is started." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16215106

I wonder if they can be over-ridden (i.e. switched off) by the driver? Until recently I had an Audi registered in 2010 until that had DRLs come on as the default setting, but they could be turned off.

I have a Skoda Superb that is fitted with DRL's .. they come on as soon as the ignition key is turned (engine does'nt need to be running) the problem that i have with mine is that people think im driving with my front fog lamps on and i've been pulled over by the Police 3 times now and threatened with a £30 fine until i show them that the front fogs are'nt on

I always run with my lights on unless it's a bright sunny day, (which doesn't happen very often North of Hadrians ). It's a habit I have from being a motorcyclist. If I could i'd fit Pink Floyds light show to my bike along with Motorheads P.A. just so some of the more observationally challenged drivers might (might being the operative word) notice me.
