Who sized you for that in a compact frame? the guys in the shop?

Its effing huge, if you were 6'5" it would be right, not for a bloke of 5'10" though

There is something not right there at all, there isnt enough seat post showing, a typical sign of a compact being sized wrong is a huge frame with a short seat pin height.

If you feel like a berk for buying a bike two sizes two big then you should have said so

And then attempted to sell it some one who is 6'4"

Not 5'10"
Why should I feel like a berk?
It was my first bike, I tried a smaller one in the shop and this felt fine, I still ride it occasionally and it still feels fine, only a problem on 50+ mile rides do I get a bit of backache.

Not surprised, thats because the reach is way to long for you, regular use and you would do yourself fairly serious damage

5'10" that puts you in the 54/56 cm ball park for a compact, the next two sizes up are going to be 58 and then 60

Which means its a bike for a lanky freak, of course blokes around the 5'10" mark are much more common than 6'5"

Which gives you a much wider audience of inexperienced cyclists to offload an incorrectly sized bike on to

Lots of love
