I am buying a new bike and am not sure what wheels to have. I have Aksiums on my current bike but have no experience of Fulrum's racing 5, which are a similar price. Any views from others who may have views on both welcome.

I was looking at the same type of wheels around 9 months ago.The Fulcrum's are a bit more bling I think, but the Aksium's still look very good IMHO. After reading a bit on the net and talking to a couple of blokes that are keen serious cyclists at work I went for the Aksium's and they have been superb, never going out of true compared to the shite Alexrims that they replaced. Then again you have experience of the Mavic's yourself so it puts you in a good position. Unless you just fancy a change that is, as there is probably little in the 2 weight-wise. Not that I know.

Thanks for that, I have the same opinion of the Mavics and I also used them to replace Alexrims. I will probably go with the Aksiums as I would like to replace them with Kysrium SL's when can afford to anyhow.

I had Mavic but not at home so cannot check the model, but suspect around the Aksiums level in the range. After one of them cracked around a spoke I decided to replace them. At the time Mavic was restricting UK/Europe bike shops from selling overseas and I was not willing to be ripped off locally so I went with the Fulcrum Racing 5. I have had those wheels on my Audax ride since 2010. After about 3,000 km I did a spoke and other than breaking a spoke in a traffic incident they have been good wheels for me.

When it comes time to replace these rims I think Fulcrum Racing 5 will be on the short list again.
