Looking at Audax events to enter and I downloaded a GPX file from the organiser of "Barbury Bash 110".
Loading the file I get an error message "Only 100 points can be used for follow road navigation".
Had a look on the Garmin Forum but I could not find a conclusive answer to this.
There is reference to GPX track and GPX route - anyone got an opinion/solution?
Thanks.

I tried to d/load another audax route which was purportedly a gpx file. It didn't work and the organiser had to do some jiggery pokery to fix it.

Either 1) contact the organnisers and ask them to fix it, or 2) map the gpx route yourself.

I have a cheaper Garmin etrex but I guess the basics are the same. GPX files are either tracks (essentially showing you where you or someone else went) and routes (made up of via points) through which your satnav will attempt to autoroute.
Annoyingly (at least on the etrex) you can't follow tracks only routes. After much Googling and cursing I use the following approach. Download a track which I visually follow and overlay route(s) over the top of the track. This allows me to get prompted navigation but also makes sure I'm not being led off track. You will also find the number of points in a route or track is limited (more so in a route) so you will often need to filter down the number of points. I use mapsource and a free but powerful WinGDB3 tool.

It's all not as user friendly as it should be.

I have a feeling the route you have downloaded has got more than 100 "waypoint's" built into it as apposed to "track points". The 705 will only hold a maximum of 100 waypoints and will probably even include ones that you have put in the 705 yourself as locations etc.

A route itself can have track points running into 1000s+, as a test a simple 25 mile route I have done has 559 track points and that is only a small route.

Your best bet is to edit out these waypoints that have been additionally added or redo the route yourself

I have just had a look at the gpx in mapsource and it is riddled with waypoints and cannot understand how they have made it as waypoints are usually added manually to highlight things but on this route they are every few yards almost.

Maybe I have found a solution after some searching and comparing files:

replaced all RTEPT tags with TRKPT.

The file is now loaded without the "100 limit" error, and the 705 is in navigation.
I can't fully test this as the start point is about 50km from my current location.

Does this make any sense ....
