Garmin edge heart rate monitor - can I use in the gym?

So I bought an edge 500 with the heart rate monitor strap.

Can I use this in the gym by pairing it with a cheap watch or other device? Or are they all paired only to a specific brand or device?

Seeing as I already have the strap, I just want something cheap as a display

You should be able to use it with any ANT+ capable device, like a Garmin Forerunner watch for example.

No. You'll need an ANT+ compatible device and most mainstream gym equipment (techogym/cybex and the like) won't be

You can use the 500 just set a bike profile to use in the gym page 43 in the manual ( you can have 3 profiles) and put the 500 so you can see it or get a cheap arm strap phone holder and put it in that. Before you use it inside turn off GPS page 45.
