I am going on a week- long tour down the Danube :- Vienna - Budapest basically. I was thinking of getting a Garmin Edge Touring for £169 from Halfords, but looking at it in detail shows that it doesn't cover Hungary. Does anyone know if I can get maps for Hungary and if so, how much they cost ?

Thanks

I think you can download it free from sites like:
http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
check the map for coverage, but it looks fairly complete

OK, it seems the maps indicated earlier were not by Garmin. Then my question becomes - is it OK to rely on "none official" maps like these ? and is it easy to install them in the GPS machine ?

Hmmmmm... I'm quite computer literate, but I would worry that I would end up in the middle of Hungary with no maps. Is there a way to buy and install an official Garmin one ? Which I imagine would be easier ?

Hi

I wouldnt go anywhere unfamiliar without paper maps, especially abroad, your asking for trouble relying on GPS only

Hi

Good tip is buy the road atlas for the country you cycling in, rip out what pages you need, folds up taking no space

If you want a Garmin map, you can get the Garmin NTEurope map, which includes full coverage of Hungary................it's around £75 though! You can download it from the Garmin website, or buy it on DVD or SD from various outlets.

Ok, this is looking better then.. I can try the free maps, but if I fail completely I can, in the end, cough up the cash and buy an official one which, I assume, will install easily.

Then the next question that occurs to me, and maybe should have occurred earlier, is : Which is the best GPS for touring - it needs to be nothing fancy - just maps and other simple things.
