Very proud of my eldest daughter today, scary time waiting outside the school today for her to emerge with her results... 7 A's and 4 B's, slightly above prediction, very, very happy indeed. All her own work too.

It's been a good day.

How did others fare?

I appreciate the 'all her own work' point.

We know of 2 families where the father started 'tuning' coursework, not just for GCSE but A-level and university [receiving essays by email, correcting/amending them and emailing back. I kid you not!] Though they are intelligent people they clearly don't acknowledge that their children will be under pressure from now on because they won't understand the content and will rely totally on daddy for help for everything which doesn't promote confidence and self-reliance.

That aside [sorry, not very positive...] well done to FF minor. Isn't it a weight off your mind! Now she can relax!

Anywhere nice to celebrate?

well done to her. And it's funny, I'm sort of more impressed with those than all the 17 A* I've been hearing about on the news. They seem too good to be true.

My daughter got three As, 7Bs a C and an E. I'm pleased for her though my wife is disappointed as she expected ratio of As:Bs to be the other war round with a smattering of A* grades for good measure.

It was all her own work and only two subjects are closed to her at A level - the ones with the C and E grades.

I'm not sure of the need for 11 GCSEs. But anyway the girl did good.

Big Congrats to Vernon minor! The thing people don't realise with education especially when the expectation is that further education beckons is that learning is a Marathon, not a Sprint. GCSE are just the first part, the groundwork, the winter fitness, it's getting to the finish in a good position that really counts.

Archie techt, you picked-up my vibe, I know so many families even of kids at Private schools who basically spend every evening doing their kids homework with them and in some cases plaigerising elder siblings coursework. There were no incentive schemes either, no I-Pod or £'s/grade That's why I'm so happy with my lasses result, she did it her way, for herself and I'm sure that will put her in good stead for the future.

Arch, thanks for the lovely comment as always.

Unfortunately we're not doing anything special as as soon as we got the results, the lass was off to the Reading Festival for 4 days with friends... I'm sure now she's earned it!

I know of someone who had her coursework done by/assisted with/amended by her mother all the way through to the end of her first degree. No doubt the assistance continued through her masters and her PhD in art/art bull5hit/art appreciation

Her mother has expressed surprise that her daughter has not been inundated with employment offers in academia since being awarded the PhD the following anecdote indicates why employment might elude her until she is truly educated in the world of art appreciation:

The soon to be PhD was in an art gallery looking at some posters with a friend of mine who pointed out a poster and said 'Look that's Guernica' to which she replied 'No. That's a Picasso'. What hope is there for the generation of students that she aspires to teach?

What will she add of value to the body of knowledge when she has been divorced from making independent decisions and evaluations for most of her academic life?

My boy didnt do as well as he had hoped but got 3 B's 2 C's and a BTEC Pass and a couple of unmentionables!! - as long as he tried his best, I am proud of him.

Well done to all of them that passed whateer their grades - glad its not me going through it.

Well done to Minors FF & Vernon. I think there's tremendous pressure on kids these days and I'm not one who believes things have got easier. Son no.1 steps into secondary school this year, so I have all this to come.

Congrats to all mentioned above.

My son got 3A*, 6A's, 1B and 1C. As with the others, all his own work - pointless otherwise, and he knew that as well!

Also, I got a pass in OCR First Award ICT
