Hi all,

I am fairly new to cycling again, not having cycled since my teens. I purchased a road bike, but I find often that when I change up and down the gears they often slip and often when they have changed don't sound very smooth and as if they are about to slip again. Also, when I change the gear at the front derailleur I have to make sure the change lever goes right over before it will change from the small cog to the big cog? How do I remedy this please?

Thanks in advance

Alan

If it's a new purchase and you bought it locally - take it back to be tweaked.

If not, replace and or clean/lubricate the gear cable inners and make sure they don't bind anywhere, then adjust the high and low limit screws on the derailleurs (plenty of videos on youtube), and finish off fine-tuning on the cable adjusters.

If it's still sluggish/noisy, it's probably time for a new chain and possibly freewheel/cassette too (won't apply if the bike's new).
