I might be jumping the gun a bit here, but I returned an item to one of the smaller online cycle shops and my refund hasn't appeared yet. I've e-mailed them twice and got no response.

I've just googled them and there is a long list of unhappy customers. I should have done this before ordering really!

So, just assuming a few more weeks pass and still no refund, what could I do? I paid by Credit Card so I must be insured against this right?

Also, luckily I had a desire (don't know why) to send it back special delivery which was expensive but probably very sensible.

Credit card payment claw back kicks in at £100.01
I would agree - do a chargeback. But actually you can do it for any amount. I forcibly took £4.50 back from a Sandbag tickets for a gig whose date had changed. They refunded the tickets but told me they wouldn't refund the booking fee because a different date was available. I said that's not my problem - you can't provide what I paid for which was a specific gig on a specific date.

I used the analogy that If I paid for a green car, and they sent me a red one then they haven't provided what I paid for. The bank agreed with me and £4.50 duly received! I suggest you don't waste any more time dealing with the retailer and do the same.

Anyway, I'm not going to name them just yet. I'd like to see my money again first, it was quite a lot (for me).

If they are based in Sheffield/Rotherham they seem to have a habit of ignoring e-mails. You're much better off ringing them.

it can be done then if necessary
yes, I'll wait another 10 days and then start the process if I've still had no joy. I guess a call to the Credit Card company is the first step?

Yes, it's easy. I've done it as a customer and had it done as a supplier. Either way you put yiur side and show evidence. Everytine it's been investigated its gone my way.

I finally got a reply after 3 e-mails. So, because of Christmas, they are only processing returns one day per week, so a delay of a couple of weeks is likely. Well, at least I know the situation now!

Hmmm, yes. The situation is, you've left £165 of your hard-earned in the hands of a bunch of muppets who are unprofessional at best. You're obviously more patient and 'reasonable' than I would be in your shoes, but do be careful of any 'statute of limitations' in terms of timing appeals to your CC company or whoever. I don't know the small print, but I believe you have to make claims 'within x days of y' or your lights lapse. Hope it all works out for you.

I heard (so might not be true) that I would have to wait a full 30 days before the credit card company would act anyway

I know we're all supposed to support small business and all, but I've had exactly this experience recently when I needed to return my PowerTap wheel.

After a number of failures to return calls and emails, I manage to get hold of 'the man', who promises to send me a return code and address as soon as I've put the phone down. That was two weeks ago. In the meantime I managed to finagle my way directly to the distributors who gave me all the required return info. The wheel is there now, hopefully having "soft kitty" sung to it.

In the short term, I'd rather sort the problem first than start a peeing contest with incompetence. Don't let it become more of your problem than it needs to be. +1 call in the credit card goons.

Anyone interested in the company name - PM me.
