I'm gettting back to normal. After several weeks of being a fair weather cyclist I feel rejeuvinated. I got up early today to cycle to the sorting office to collect a parcel, so a little diversion of about 12 miles. It wasn't raining at 6.30am so I happily got washed and changed etc. Then the hail came. I would have, in my fair weather persona, thought "sod this, I'm taking the car". Thankfully I'd been too lazy to fill the car with petrol the night before. I suppose I could have got petrol before going to the sorting office, but that would have been too much of a chore and even more in the wrong direction to work than the sorting office is. So instead I thought "brilliant, just what I wanted. I'll have to put my boil in the bags on before going out". That was my old self before the wind came and turned me into a wussy. Anyway, by the time I'd got kitted out it had stopped hailing and I had a nice but cold cycle to the sorting office. It started drizzling just as I arrived, and this persisted until about the last 4 miles when it p*ssed down and I technically got drenched, although having waterproofs on I was really nice and dry (bar the sweat). I really enjoyed my ride despite getting wet. My only complaint is to do with my sealskin gloves. I'd totally forgotten how rubbish they are. It wasn't what I would call extremely cold this morning, and the rest of me was toasty warm. However my fingers were like ice. Usually my toes are also like ice in sympathy with the fingers but they were fine. I suspect the sealskins are extremely good at keeping the cold air trapped inside the glove, thus acting as a freezer. It took me miles and miles to get my hands feeling normal. I think it is time to drag my proper winter gloves out of the cupboard.
