Getting ready for winter... CX bike/frameset for 42C tyres?

Problem is, for most of us, the commuter isn't just the commuter. Mine's my tourer & gravel path bike. For a long while, the SCR2 was my road bike, errand bike, commuting bike...because it was my only bike.
I have the same problem, (well the mtb I hardly use and the retro bike is there because its pretty) - my commuting bike is my main bike for everything practically, hence my heart ruling my wallet. However commuting is 95% of my miles (except in the summer where I may go out in the evenings) so I incorrectly surmised that the OP's main mileage is commuting like mine.

Actually, 99.9% of my mileage is commuting... although when I started 3 years ago I thought I'd get the odd long weekend ride in, I think I've only managed a handful in that time. When you're doing ~140 miles a week getting to work (28 mile round trip, 5 days a week) I tend to find myself doing other stuff at the weekend!
