Just watched a really good film called My Italian Secret. It's a very moving story about the bravery of the Italian people and the role that Bartali played in smuggling false identity documents to the resistance to help Jews and refugees escape capture from the Nazis.
Bartali went on to win the Tour for the second time in 1948, ten years after he'd first won it.
Highly recommend it. Ordinary people who risked their lives to save others because they didn't believe that people should be killed just for being different.
